My paintings begin with noticing.

Flowers brought in from the yard. An old barn nearly disappearing beneath the ivy. Tiger lilies growing beside a cemetery. The changing light in a room. The things my children notice before I do.

These ordinary moments have become the language of my work.

I paint primarily in watercolor and ink, materials I love because they refuse to behave perfectly. Water moves. Colors bleed. Lines wander. I’ve learned to leave room for those things to happen—to let the painting carry some evidence of the moment in which it was made.

My studio practice lives right alongside the rest of my life: family, flowers, walks through town, music playing, half-finished sketches, interruptions, and whatever happens to be sitting on the kitchen table.

More and more, I think that’s what I’m trying to paint.

Not the extraordinary.

The ordinary things we might miss—and the ones we’ll someday realize were everything.
